The city of Atlanta has made great progress in reducing crime, largely as a result of increased staffing and police visibility following a recruitment effort that began in 2003.
Police visibility is widely recognized as a known factor in reducing crime rates. From 2003 to 2008, the APD police force grew from 1,433 officers to 1,784. During that time, violent crime decreased 38%, the overall crime rate went down 21% and Atlanta dropped from the 2nd most violent city in the nation to 16th.
